We are pleased to offer our clients Alpha2EQ, a drug-free therapy designed to address inflammation-associated equine lameness. Alpha2EQ is an orthobiologic, which describes preparations of naturally occurring substances developed to improve the body’s own healing process and used to support musculoskeletal health. It’s also autologous, meaning the orthobiologic is derived from an individual horse’s body and used solely for that specific horse.
The patent pending AlphaActive process uses a sample of the horse’s blood and isolates a protein called alpha-2-macroglobulin. This protein binds to and eliminates substances known to impede healing. Alpha-2-macroglobulin resides in joint fluid and other tissues throughout the body; however, its large molecular size makes it unable to naturally access certain areas at high enough concentrations to be most effective. Alpha2EQ solves this issue. When processed and subsequently injected, the Alpha2EQ preparation delivers this powerful protein directly to the joints or tissues that need support.
Alpha2EQ is an alternative to steroid injections and used to address tendon lesions, osteoarthritis, synovitis, and bursitis. Application areas include coffin joints, navicular bursas, hock joints, sacroiliac (SI) joints, cervical facet joints, suspensory branches, deep digital flexor tendons, collateral ligaments, and stifle joints.

Each Alpha2EQ kit yields enough preparation for use at several injection sites, and we can freeze and store excess product for up to 12 months to use on that same horse. Results are usually observed within a few days of the procedure and can last six to 12 months.
