Bend Equine Medical Center is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Daytime Hospitalized Patient Lead Veterinary Assistant or Licensed Veterinary Technician with horse experience to join our team. In this role, you’ll play a vital part in ensuring the well-being of our recovering equine patients, providing exceptional care and support from dawn to dusk.

Daily duties:

  • 6 a.m.: Arrive, clock in, and hit the ground running. Conduct a quick survey of all hospitalized patients, identifying and addressing any urgent needs like colic pain or IV issues.
  • Getting the lowdown: Review overnight technician notes and treatment sheets to prepare for the day’s tasks.
  • Treatment time: Administer medications and treatments according to schedules, prioritizing isolation patients and collaborating with other team members as needed.
  • Making rounds: Attend both technician and doctor rounds, actively participating and bringing up any pertinent observations about your patients.
  • Giving surgical support: Lend a hand to our surgery team by prepping horses for procedures, ensuring patients are ready to go.
  • Keeping things on track: Throughout the day, continue scheduled treatments, ensure veterinarians review treatment sheets, and verify accurate invoicing for all procedures and medications.
  • Maintaining patient comfort: Keep stalls, water and feed sources appropriately refreshed and clean, groom patients and make comfort adjustments.
  • Making patient updates: Keep the veterinarians informed of any changes in patients’ conditions, ensuring the horses’ well-being is always top priority.
  • Prepping patients for hospital discharge: Schedule and ensure all go-home appointments are complete, including sending medications and belongings with departing equine friends.
  • Maintaining the hospital: Alongside your team, keep the hospital ward clean, tidy, and functional – from sweeping aisles to stocking hay and keeping treatment areas organized. 
  • Being a team player: Assist with lunch coverage and collaborate with the Inventory Manager to maintain medication and supply stock.  You will be working alongside a great team that collaborates and understands how to jump in and help anyone with anything to get through our busy days. 
  • 3 p.m.: Clock-out after rounding your patients to the hospital intern doctor.
  • Being an on-call hero (future you): Once trained, you’ll join our on-call rotation for an average of 4 to 6 shifts per month
