Dr. Wayne Schmotzer -
ACVS Veterinary Surgeon
Dr. Schmotzer earned his BS and DVM degrees from Michigan State University in 1981. In 1982, he joined the faculty at Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine as an Instructor in Medicine. In 1983, he was selected for a three year large animal surgical residency at Oregon State University. In 1988, Dr. Schmotzer was trained in advanced arthroscopic surgery at Colorado State University. He became a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1992 and a tenured Associate Professor in 1993. While a clinical surgeon at OSU, Dr. Schmotzer developed an ophthalmology referral service and authored or co-authored over 40 scientific publications. Dr. Schmotzer was a founder of BEMC and is a co-owner along with Dr. Krebs. Today, he practices as a specialist in lameness, joint disease, angular limb deformities and colic, as well as arthroscopic and soft tissue surgery. Dr. Schmotzer continues his special interest in equine ophthalmology. Active research continues in laser surgery, colic surgery, and innovative surgical techniques.

Dr. Wendy Krebs
Dr. Krebs graduated with honors from the University of Oregon in 1997, with a BS degree in biology and a minor in biochemistry. She earned her DVM degrees from Oregon State University and Washington State University Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, and completed a post-graduate internship in surgery, internal medicine, reproduction, and dentistry at BEMC. She completed a four year long ACVS surgical residency program at BEMC under the tutelage of Dr. Schmotzer. In 2008, she became general partner and co-owner of BEMC. Dr. Krebs has conducted research on the use of lasers for pastern joint fusion and prevention of incisional drainage following colic surgery. Her main areas of practice interest are soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, although she enjoys all aspects of equine veterinary medicine. Dr. Krebs has owned and competed with horses throughout most of her life; she currently trains her Thoroughbred mare, Luna, in three day eventing when her work schedule allows.

Dr. Mary Masterson
Dr. Masterson joined BEMC in 2006, after practicing at Columbia Equine in Gresham,
OR for five years. Dr. Masterson is a graduate of the Tufts University Veterinary
School and completed an internship at Alamo Pintado, a premier equine veterinary
clinic in California. Her main areas of interest are reproduction, internal medicine
and acupuncture. Dr. Masterson has had horses all her life and competed extensively
in the hunter jumper discipline as a junior. She recently began actively showing again
with her warmblood mare, Glory.

Dr. Jessica Evans
Dr. Jessica Evans became an associate at BEMC in 2008. She graduated in 2007
from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and then completed
a one year internship in equine medicine, surgery, reproduction, and dentistry
at BEMC. Dr. Evans has significant equine experience, including working in the ICU
unit at OSU and working with racehorses for the Ohio State Racing Commission.
She was also a member of the Miami University Equestrian Team in undergraduate
college. She is an avid outdoorsperson, and enjoys skiing, hiking, and kayaking.

Dr. Freya Stein
Dr. Freya Stein is our 2008-2009 intern. She hails from Afton, Minnesota, and she earned her BA in biology and graduated with honors from Grinnell College in Iowa. In May of 2008, Dr. Stein graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. While in school, she was very involved in equine activities, including colic team, foal team, and the student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Dr. Stein will complete a one year internship at BEMC learning the finer aspects of veterinary medicine, surgery, dentistry, and reproduction. When not at work, Dr. Stein loves exploring the outdoors with her husky cross, Haley, and working with her Thoroughbred mare, Izzy, and her Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse gelding, Remy.

Misha Kirchmeier
Misha is our Director of Technical Services. She earned her BS degree in Animal Science from Cornell University while she worked as a laboratory animal technician. At Oregon State University, Misha worked as a Veterinary Technician in surgery, anesthesia, and patient receiving. Misha is a licensed veterinary technician, and has advanced training in anesthetic patient monitoring, radiology, surgery, laboratory techniques, outpatient receiving, and intensive care monitoring. She has been with BEMC since 1997.

Sarah Cook
Sarah wears two hats as both office manager and technician. She earned her Animal Science degree from Oregon State University in 1998. Sarah worked at the Oregon State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1995 to 1998. She is an avid horsewoman and has owned horses all her life; she currently is "mom" to Rodney and Desi in addition to her human family. Sarah is a licensed veterinary technician, and is trained in radiology, surgery, laboratory techniques, outpatient receiving and intensive care monitoring. She has been with BEMC since 1998.

Carol Nork
Carol earned a degree in zoology from the Frankfurt, Germany zoo in 1995 and went on to work at the Oregon Zoo in Portland, and most recently worked with native wildlife at the High Desert Museum here in Bend, Oregon. Carol is a licenced veterinary technician that joined Bend Equine in 2004 and is trained in radiology, surgery, out-patient receiving, and intensive care monitoring. She owns an Arabian cross, Amigo, and is usually accompanied to work by her black lab, Sadie. Carol is a passionate scuba diver and enjoys traveling to different countries in search of new underwater adventures.

Erica Angele
Erica, a licensed veterinary technician, earned her BS degree in Animal Science from Oregon State University in 2004. She has worked as a veterinary technician at several practices, and joined BEMC in 2005 to devote herself to working with equines. She is also a member of the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians. Erica is active in cutting horse competitions and owns two Quarter Horse mares, Grumpy and Foxy. She keeps herself busy by trying to keep up with her three dogs, Tuffy, Dixie, and Daisy.

Ashley Clark
Ashley Clark joined BEMC in 2007 as an equine veterinary technician. She previously
worked at Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center, a well-known clinic in California, for
5 years where she focused on surgery and anesthesia. Ashley is a graduate of Cal
Poly State University, where she received her BS in Animal Science. She is a member
of the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians. Ashley has experience
in many equine disciplines, from cutting to eventing. She currently owns Kalena, a
Haflinger cross mare, with whom she competes in eventing.

Susie Botts
Susie Botts, receptionist and customer service specialist, is a life long animal lover with significant career experience in customer service. She melded her two interests in 2004, when she joined BEMC as our receptionist. Susie owns two horses,
Almighty and Dusty, and is an avid trailrider.

Ann Dahlen
Ann joined BEMC in 2008 and works as a receptionist. She enjoys participating in reining competitions with her two Quarter Horses, Roxy and Cody. Besides horses, her interests include outdoor activities, especially fly-fishing. Ann and her husband have fly-fished in many exotic locations including Chile, Costa Rica, and New Zealand. They share their home with their two dogs Bailey and Brew.

Richard Wolfe
Richard joined the staff of BEMC in 2001 as the groundskeeper and facility maintanence manager. Richard and his wife moved to Central Oregon in 2000 from Dodge City, Kansas where he worked as the Chief Officer and Arson Investigator with the Dodge City Fire Department. He is an avid fisherman and hiker, and enjoys spending time with his two granddaughters.
